| When basketball coach Bobby Knight saw and learned about Drum Corp International (DCI) he stated, “If an athletic team worked as hard as these people do, they would be unbelievable”. A recent Sports Illustrated article noted “these groups rehearse 60 hours for every one minute of performance.” The performers are brass musicians, percussionists and a color guard an ensemble that uses costumes, dance and equipment such as flags and rifles to visually interpret the music. All of these elements are integrated into a constantly moving tableau, which may at times be slow and graceful or fast-paced and energetic. On top of all this, drum corps is a competitive sport. Each performance is scored by a panel of judges much like Olympic figure skating or gymnastics. The hours of practice during the summer, degree of difficulty, the physical and mental commitment required to excel in this program are extraordinary. In exchange for this dedication, members receive the most honest and challenging education in music and in life. As a by-product of this devotion, members derive self-confidence, a sense of belonging, and a sense of control over the influences and decisions affecting their lives. DCI is an incredible experience for both the corps and the audience. To learn more, go to www.dci.org |
